All About Tribal Tattoo Art - The History
The tribal tattoo goes back to the early days of modern civilization. Everywhere that you turn there is a person that is sporting a tribal tattoo from some tribe from their past. The main tribes that you see tribal tattoo art from are the Celtics, Maori, North America, African and the Borneo tribes.
So let's talk about these tribes and what the tribal tattoo from them means. The first group is the Celtics. First this style of tattoo comes primarily from Ireland and includes Celtic knot designs which are most times outside of a Celtic Cross. This design is meant to represent a cycle of birth and death. In addition there are designs that are representative of animals as well.
Maori tribal tattoos come from the Maori people of New Zealand, they are the New Zealand Aboriginals and call their tattoo art by the name "Moko". Among the Maori the design of the Moko is very important. As a person's Moko design is changed as their social status increases and reflects their opposition in society. The most beautiful of the Moko designs are reserved for the tribe's royal levels and indicate the sacredness of the Maoris complex beliefs in the stewardship of the chieftains to lead the tribe to health, success and happiness.
Samoan tribal tattoo art is traditionally applied with a carved boar tusk. The tusk is sharpened to a very fine point with a piece of coal before being attached to a stick and a turtle shell. The tool is used to carve the designs into the skin, the wounds are then rubbed with a mixture of candle soot and sugar water. This causes the wounds to develop a very deep color to the resulting scars.
These are a few of the examples as to how tribes use various forms of tribal tattoos to separate themselves from the rest of other societies around the globe. These tribes have always used these methods to tattoo their members of society. We are not like them and tend to just go and get a tattoo because we are bored or are dared to, while there are still plenty of people who stay true to their cultures. And tend to have a tattoo that is native to their land.
Tattoos are a piece of every culture and as long as there are traditions there will be tribes that carry those
traditions on to the other members of their people in their tribes.
